In 2002, Park City was chosen as a venue site for the Winter Olympics, and is home to three of North America's leading ski resorts: The Canyons Resort, Deer Valley Resort, and Park City Mountain Resort.

As part of its responsibilities under the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, Park City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) contracted with SWCA Environmental Performance Group to baseline its government operations greenhouse gas emissions, and also to estimate its 1990 greenhouse gas emissions.

SWCA Environmental Performance Group worked with Park City to complete the baseline carbon inventory on a very aggressive schedule. SWCA Environmental Performance Group generated a publicly available report documenting and explaining the results, with PCMC's greenhouse gas emissions broken out by both department and facility.
